SIDEWALK FRIENDS

Out in the dark dampened night
The wind blows smells of rain once again
Catch the leaves as they fall
Game of childhood fair

Fill the sidewalk cracks
With these fallen leaves
Brown and wrinkled
Follow the sidewalk and grates 'round
Breathe frost cold and shiver

stumble over those filling cracks
Wonder 'bout those old quacks
Who are sheltered with
Walls warmth and quilt

These trees grow wiser than those in there
And feel not one bit of guilt when
They lose one of their summery friends
To the sidewalk
Cold brown and withered
